| March 2011, Welcome race fans. We are glad you found us again on our new website. My dad Kenny Johnson grew up in the Bay Area during the Golden Years of Flat Track. He was able to see firsthand his longtime school friend Phil Cancilla move into the upper ranks of racing on his favorite motor, the Triumph against those big Harleys. Dad never called them motorcycles but motors. I can remember dad taking me to Philly's Southern California shop around 1966 and all those beautiful engines and motors all over. There is a photo of dad and Philly in front of his shop on this website. Dad used to call him the fastest Dego on two wheels. He also hung out at Tom Siftons shop where many riders hung out also looking for a ride or their repaired motor for the next race. One of those great riders was Kenny Eggers. Dad told me Kenny used to always tell him to quit smoking of which he never did. Bunny Ribbs was also one of those great riders my dad was close to in the San Jose scene. I wish I had a tape recorder for all the great stories dad told me about his Flat Track experience. He tried racing a few times but couldn't hack the track and team politics so he just enjoyed the sport from the sidelines then had to report for duty in the Korean war. I'm really glad for the rich racing history my old man passed onto me for this website is a product of his and Dick McAfee's late in life relationship. Eric Johnson, Whittier, CA. Nov 17, 2011 Hi Eric: In the past month, have had a few calls on the Web Site being up again and hearing nice compliments. This has been a busy year for me taking care of things, and was remiss in not checking from time to time. Anyway Eric, you did a superb job and hopefully the site will grow with more of the "old timers" coming forward with more old photos and history. If not the Old Timers , their families. I have always felt proud that Dick Dorrestyen, Dick Mann, Kenny (Plain) Harvey, Myron Henrickson to name a few had gotten their interest in motorcycle racing from hanging around Dick's Shop way back in the 50's. Nice memories. Thank you for the nice Tribute to Dick. Dick would be proud to see that all of the fellows on the site have been recognized. I have about 20 binders of pictures that one day, will end up in the Motorcycle Flat Track Museum. Thank you Eric for a job well done in recognizing Flat Track Racers. Ramona McAfee |
